Genichi Taguchi contribution to Quality Management | Student Notes |

Intro. . . .

Genichi Taguchi was born in Japan in the year of 1924 and was a student of textile engineering at Kiryu University. Gen'ichi Taguchi is an engineer and statistician. Taguchi developed a methodology for applying statistics to improve the quality of manufactured goods.

Taguchi Contribution

The key elements of his quality philosophy are:

1.)  Taguchi loss function

2.) The philosophy of off-line quality control

3.) Design of Experiments

1.) Taguchi loss function

It is used to measure the financial loss to society by the product, starting from product design till the delivery of the product to the customer. The loss can cause by poor quality, product failure, repair, pollution, noise, the side effect of the product (mobile is useful but radiation is harmful), etc.

2.)  The philosophy of off-line quality control

Designing products and processes that match the parameters set by the design engineers. Taguchi realized that the best opportunity to eliminate variation is during the design of a product and its manufacturing process, and it consists of 3 stages:

1. System design - This is design at the starting level that involving creativity and innovation.

2. Parameter design - Next task is to set parameters for various dimensions and design.

3. Tolerance design - With a completed parameter design, and an understanding of the effect that the various parameters have on performance, resources can be focused on reducing and controlling variation.

3.) Design of Experiments

Taguchi gave a lot of attention to experiments and design. Taguchi wants that the methods should provide an understanding that in what way variations work. How variations affect the operation of the organization and what steps management should take to fix the variance.
