Types of production system | Intermittent Production System | Continuous Production System

 Meaning of Intermittent Production System

Intermittent is a situation in which manufacturers produce low-volume, but high-variety of products. The production of the product can be on an individual basis that is one by one or in batch. But the next process or product requires a different manufacturing route or machines for producing the product. It happens due to a change in size, shape, appearance, color, etc. of the product or job.

1. Job shop Production System

In the job shop production flows, the company accepts a contract to produce one or a few units and produced them as per the specification of customers within prefixed time and cost. The cost and time are fixed at the time of signing the contract.

Examples of such job production are clothing, Shipbuilding, bridges, dam construction, handmade crafts like furniture, etc.

2.) Project Production System

In project production flows, the company accepts a single, complex order or job. The order must be completed within a specified time frame and at an estimated cost.

Examples of project production flows are the construction of airports, dams, roads, buildings, shipbuilding, etc.

3.) Batch Production System

As the company grows and volumes increased it start producing its products using a batch production system. In this method work of a job or task is divided into different parts or operations. One operation has to be completed before sending it to the next operation.

This method is different from job production. As in job production, a product is made based on customers’ demands. But in batch production, the features, appearances, designs, everything of the product have been set.

For example, a shoe factory could make different batches of shoes based on a different size, shape, and color.

Meaning of Continuous Production System

Continuous as the name suggests, something that operates constantly without irregularities or frequent stops. In the continuous production system, goods are produced continuously as per the demand forecast. The goods are not produced on customer request. The inputs and outputs are standardized before the production.

1. Process Production System

Process Production is carried on continuously through a uniform and standardized sequence. In this highly automatic machines are used. It helps to produce products in bulk quantity. The output is sold out in the market or stored to fulfill the quick demand in the future. Examples of production process flows include steel, cement, paper, sugar, etc.

2. Mass Production System

Mass production system offers economies of scale as the volume of output is large. The quality of products tends to be uniform and high due to standardization. There are workers and machines at certain stages along the line that is responsible for making certain parts of the product. The machines are arranged in a line or according to the product layout.
